IAN MICHLER

A stockbroker by profession, he left the world of finance in 1989 to live and work in the wilderness. He now has seventeen years of experience as lodge manager, owner, specialist guide and photo-journalist, 12 of them while based in the Okavango Delta, Botswana. He guides throughout Southern and East Africa and his experience covers all aspects of big game, photography, birding, cultural and adventure safaris.

As a photojournalist, he writes predominately for Africa Geographic and Africa Birds & Birding, two of the continents leading nature-based magazines. His topics cover conservation, wildlife management and travel, and he has been writing a monthly column for Africa Geographic since 2001. He has also worked as a researcher and field coordinator on various natural history television documentaries for international broadcasters, and annually contributes to a short course on eco-tourism and conservation at the University of Cape Town.

He is the author and photographer of six books – This is Mozambique, Mozambique; A Visual Souvenir, Botswana – The Insiders Guide, Zanzibar- The Insiders Guide, Kenya and Tanzania – The Insiders Guide and Victoria Falls – The Insiders Guide, and is a past winner of the bird category in the Agfa Wildlife photographic competition.
